I honestly think I have a homosexual male Convict. I've got a 29Gallon that I had planned for Convicts so my Jag would have safe feeders.

Now comes the issue. Male convict and female added same time from 2 different sources. Got along fine, 2 days later, eggs. On the third day, eggs are gone and female is dead. Attempt #2, Male Convict goes to a timeout 10 Gallon tank while I pick him up a new girl. She goes in the rearranged 29, a week later, the male goes back in. Fine until lights out, in the morning, she's dead. Now I'm pissed, convict goes into a breeder's net in the 150 with the Jag for a 2 week timeout. So, now I've got 2 females, put them both in the 29. One is coloring up nicely, the other is cowering in the corner, should be safe. Hell no, male comes out of timeout again. Chases both of the females around, I seperate the small female. The male and the female start lip locking, now she's cowering in the corner of the tank behind the heater.

I've never had issues like this with Convicts, any suggestions?

get a much larger female..or try again with a new male.

my male is so docile my female beats him up.

Keep the male. Sometimes you'll need a group to actually establish a breeding pair. IE, grab a cheap mixed bag of smaller convicts from a local shop for $10. When presented with choices, convicts will normally pair up hard, and then get to the killing bit. ;) Post that, you'll have breeders. Be quick, the rejects will be beaten Hard.

I've just never had issues with a male not wanting to get jiggy with a ripe female. Guess I'll go to one of the LFS, they've got convicts for 99 cents each.
