A few months back I got what t thought was 4 firemouths (less than an inch) but one of them ended up being a female convict.

I didn't mind it as I also like convicts and figured she might pair up with someone else in the tank so I went with it.

Now yesterday I noticed she had layed eggs on a plant, but I have not seen her pair up with any one yet.

My question is, do convicts lay eggs before pairing up or after. I'm curious to see if they hatch as I have a few compatible variations. If they don't get eaten first lol.

Possible mates include:
Blood parrot
Firemouths
Nicaraguan cichlid

Unless she paired up with one of the other Cichlids the eggs will be infertile. Female cichlids can produce eggs without male but they will not be fertile.

Ohhh ok I didn't know that. That's probably what happened. I'll keep an eye out just in case but yeah, they're all juvies for the most part so its probably a matter of time lol

Thank you!

Years ago I had a "pair " of angels that both laid eggs after I moved them into a different tank. I believe that they then ate each others eggs

Yeah that has always been my experience with Angel's. They always ended up eating the eggs.

I've read that you need to separate the pair from everyone else completely or remove the eggs for a better chance at hatching them.

I've only tried in community type settings tho

I have had lone females lay eggs with no male in the tank of their species. The female will guard the eggs for a few days, then when fungus starts to grow, will probably eat them. Pretty normal behavior.

Here is my female tamasopoensis guarding eggs in her cave. There were no males in this tank other than panamensis, which themselves were breeding at the same time in another part of the tank.

I had a Green Terror that would also lay eggs with no mate. But she would lay like ten of them, spin around and eat the row of eggs she just laid.
