Convict Lesson learned!

I found out today that I have successfully bred Convicts. I purchased a cave like this,

And they claimed it a few days after I put it in the tank. I also put a nice flat piece of rock in front of the opening hoping they would spawn on the rock. I haven't seen any spawning behavior, but the female had holed herself up in the cave for the most part and the male would rush the glass when I came near.

Well today I looked into the tank to see what looked like hair hanging off the back of the stump and the female would come out and eat the hair and dart back into the cave.

Upon closer inspection I realized the hair were Fry and I decided to get them out of their before she ate them all. The plan was to put them in a 10G I have laying around with an Established sponge filter.

I reached in to move the den so I could get the net behind it and over a hundred Fry come spilling out. I panicked and put the den back in place and watched as Mom and Dad flurried around the tank eating babies. Then I realized. Their not eating them, their spitting them back into the cave...


Lesson Learned, Convicts move their fry in their mouths.

mine do it in a skull decoration my sister got me for my piranha tank. thought itd look better in there. they took right to it. every 3 weeks the female will go in the skull for about a week and when she comes out there are fry.

lol my aunt and uncle were over and came in to see the con fry in my 29. my female did the same and my aunt freaked out and was like she ate it! i told her to hang on and she watched as the female spit it back out into the nest!

I love watching the cons as the babies become more independant, they all start swimming around and the parents frantically suck huge numbers of babies up and spit them back into the hole they've dug in the gravel as more swim out. I think I've watched that for 20mins straight, lol

I love watching the cons as the babies become more independant, they all start swimming around and the parents frantically suck huge numbers of babies up and spit them back into the hole they've dug in the gravel as more swim out. I think I've watched that for 20mins straight, lol

been doing that all night mate, hilarious.
although i feel bad because my female con made her self a single mum, won't let the male near her or her babies. poor fella just wants to help.
