I went to the LFS today to get a male con. When the guy netting it out asked what size tank its going in (at least they ask...?) I said a 35 and I'm going to eventually try making a pair. It was just a nice story so they wouldn't second guess. The truth is he is going in a 75 with my jag, when he's big enough. He asked what gender I wanted so I told him male. He went to business like he knew what he was doing. He netted one out and asked, "How do you tell the sexes?" Wow... cons are one of the easiest cichlids to sex. I told him, "The ones with the orange are females." Its a pretty good feeling when you know more in a subject than somebody who makes a living in that subject.
And now my question. The convict I have doesn't have orange or anything but does have some blue on the fines, is that normal for a male or what?
P.S.- I have decided to name him Vick after Michael Vick on a count of him being a convict!
Happy Holidays,
Mike
