The breeding tank full of convicts I set up at the LFS I work sundays at are still the size of wrigglers, after three weeks!

The 30 I have left over from my brood at home that were born at the same time? Half an inch!

Of course, I raised them on micro-vert and bbs, but still, I RULE!

Spoiling fish is fun.

If i leave the fry in my 20 gallon tank, how many out of 100 will survive to make it to 1 inch?

I think I remember this question from algebra class. Doesn't it have something to do with a hypotenuse or some sort of train leaving Denver at 3pm? I dunno, I always got the wrong answer anyway.

cool. It sucks you don't work there more often so you can spoil the smaller ones too!

@pankakes: depends how experienced the parents are.

If it's the first brood, the female may care for the fry but not the male (they learn eventually)

After a few practice rounds, both fish begin to care for the fry (usually second or third brood with a new pair)

The parents will care for the fry until they begin to spawn again, at which point the initial brood will threaten the new fry and will need to be removed before they are attacked by their parents.

That being said, I get a good 30-50 fish per brood, once a month.

when i had a pair they knew what to do right off the bat, out of 60-70 fry i had 100% survival rate till i started to feed them to my other fish that is. lol

apparently though the male didn't like his fry missing, cuz after the first time i took a bunch out he killed his mate. so now he is in the mix tank right now till i figure out what to do with him.

I would double-up on sponge filtration, as these are messy fish. Two sponge filters rated for 20 gallons would be perfect, if maintained (squeezed) regularly, along with water changes. Sponge filters prevent fry from being destroyed by mechanical filtration, and provide microfauna for the fry to graze upon.

cons are such fun fish :grinno:

yeah mine just had there first batch of fry (well the female could have had some before at the lfs but the male i know hasn't it was born and raised by me) the male is taking care of the fry also, my guess is there are at least 100 fry
