Convict Nest

Hi,
my Convict pair has been nesting in the one place in the tank I can't see, under my log. I want to see if they have laid eggs. If I disturb their hiding place, and possibly their eggs, what will they do? Will they still take care of the eggs if there are any? thanks.

what benefit will chicking give you?

What possible disadvantages will checking give you?

The way I see it, the only reason you will "need" to know if you have babies coming, is so you can get food ready to feed them.

Checking could disturb the parents so they either do not spawn, eat the babies or eat the eggs...

My advice is if you think they are spawning, have food on hand for the babies and leave them alone...

They're cons right? So there's a 99% chance they're breeding. The only question is whether or not they are eating the eggs!

ok with cons heres the best way to know. stick your hand in the tank an reach towards were ther at. if the male repeadly trys to attack your hand then you know somethin is goin on. with mine. it was like a week or 2 then a bunch of small fry started swimmin out of my cichlid stone.

Exactly! LOL my male wouldn't stop pecking at me when I stuck my hand in the tank to replant some plants at the OTHER END of the tank.

One way to know for sure if you have eggs is if you see the female never leaving one spot. She will stay in one spot to fan her eggs.

jump out of the tank either aiming for genitalia or eyes with the intent to bite until chunks are missing.

probably bite your hand, maybe stop spawning for a while
