Anyone have any idea what I got here? Hybrid? A regular Convict with a lot of yellow? And I'm not sure why the eyes are showing that purple...they don't really look like that. Guessing the flash had something to do with that.Convict 1.jpg Convict 2.jpg

Could quite easily be crossed with a jade eyed cichlid but who knows.
Not used to seeing the yellow on a con but I'm no expert.
Probably never know for sure.

Looks like amatitlania siquia to me, there are a bunch of convict types they are still messing with the classifications of. And there are many different locales which have slightly different looks. I have seen siquia with this brown/yellow like yours, I believe rio Cabuyo or rio claro.

It also could be Cryptoheros spilurus, but without knowing providence, there is no way to tell without a DNA test, and if hybrid may be inconclusive.
The name Convict seems to be a generic reference to any number species within the genus Amatitlania, Cryptoheros, and previously Archocentrus,
some that have a lot of yellow, and can and will easily interbreed, producing hybrids.
There are some very "convict appearing" species
siquia, kanna, altoflava, and some not so convict like.
Here are some others I've kept from the genus Amatitlania

nanoluteus

sajica

myrnae

Thanks for the feedback. I was pretty certain it wouldn't really be possible to get an actual ID since Convicts seemingly cross with whatever is in their tank. I'm interested to see how he colors up after settling in for a bit. He was housed with a group of Africans when I got him and he is still a bit ragged and trying to sort out his new home. But I've always had a soft spot for these guys and thought he was worth the $2 I spent on him.

Yeah cons are always fun boisterous little cichlids. Big cichlid personality in a little package.

Looks very similar to my Rio tempisque pair of siquia I used a very lucky photo as my avatar

I agree w/ this. The fish certainly does look like a siquia from that location, but also Rio cabuya. If I were to guess, that is what it would be. But like others said, without knowing the origins of the fish it’s hard to say. Looks like a pure convict type though.
Also I would never jump to say something is a hybrid based on color. Colors can really vary in CA cichlids based on location. So much so that ichthologist have misidentified species. Probably one reason classification changes so much compared to African and SA cichlids.
