I got two convicts and they turned out to be a pair, one has a red spot and one doesnt. Female is about 1.5 inches and male is 2 inches. They are in a 30 gallon and ive been doing a 25% water change every week. Theyve been rubbing together chasing eachother and flaring gills at eachother for about two and a half weeks. Can anyone help??

Theyre a bit small. they might not have matured yet. i would say it even to soon to rly know u have a pair. if u have two females the dominant female will get orange and the other will not. give them a bit more time. . cold water changes and a meaty diet. also even though convict will breed in spit they do like to have options sometimes. try adding some pots or caves.

Hummm.. Weird I breed the crap out of convicts (I use them for feeders).. Never had any problems either, just throw a male in with a female and bam...Fry!! No need to hope they "pair up" or anything I haven't found one yet they didn't just breed with any other convict.

All I can say, is to make sure you defiantly have a male and female (real easy to tell the difference) keep your water clean, Crank your heat up to 86-88, make sure there are several good hiding places (I use 1" PVC fittings, crosses, tees, p-traps, plants, etc..) and feed well... Doing this you should have hundreds of babies in no time!

Thanks... I have alot of rocks stacked to make caves, a flower pot, and a fake tree stump, probably about 8-10 caves in total. The tempis on 82. And first i got the female, then about a week later a got the male. The female chased the male around but he wasnt interested. Another couple of days the male started chasing her around and then they were both courting eachother

sounds like they are trying..give them a little more time.

and the temp seems a bit high ...82? i keep my around 75 and they seem to do great i would say 75-80o

Alot of mixed opinions about tempatures... Some people say a to raise the temp to induce breeding.. And some say to lower it, any opinions

I don't have a heater in my tank my tank is about 76to 80s changed my convict 3 times to different tanks all three time they breed..my male was small but seemed to get larger than my female...I just made sure they had somewhere to breed or lay eggs...good luck..

convicts are deffinitly the easiest cichlid to breed i had a pair their size a while back that i got as 2 pairs . i toke the bigger pair and threw em in a 20 high set up with a filter and a heater and they spawned jus fine . the temp stayed at 76 . and barely every changed the water but i found out most cichlid will spawn faster in low ph around 6.0-70 . i keep my breeders with 6.5-6.8 ph and they spawn faithfully . so just try little things like that and see what happen and document everything you try it helps when you want them to spawn again or they wont spawn again
