I have an established tank with a JD pair and Oscars.

I would like to get a convict but I am wondering if it is better to get a pair or should I get a single one? If single, would a male or female be better?

Tank size is 120G, with an upgrade coming probably at the end of the year. All fish are below 5inches.

Could do both , ever a single Convict or a pair , but getting a pair ( Male and Female ) you will most likely end up having fry in your tank as mostly if not all Male and Female Convicts in the same tank will mate up and breed togeather .

So it's really up to you on if you want a Single Convict or have a Pair and have loads and loads of Fry about in your tank .

But saying that you Oscar will most likely eat all the Fry , if you dont take them out of the tank straight away .

Careful cuz u might end up with one of the JD/convict hybrids i have pics in pne of my threads..remember?

Yeah the pics of the hybrids...

I was just wondering because I have a mating pair of JD's and wondered if it was a good idea or not to mix in a pair of convicts. There might end up being couple wars or something ;)

almost everything ive read about convicts says a breeding pair will kill everything in the tank

i had 2 convicts, male was about 2" and the female was maybe 1.5" in a 29g tank with a 2.5" firemouth and a 3" black molly

the convicts spawned but before the eggs hatched i took out the rock they were on and scrubbed them off

before i did this the convicts were definitly more territorial but no real harm came to the other inhabitants

maybe mine are just sissies :D

Cool, thanks for the info...

Right now the LFS has convicts and GT's, and I am really between the two as to which to add.

You'll be fine. My cons only get violent with my JD if I let the fry become free swimming because the pair's territory begins to move with the fry.

I'd do a mated pair in a tank that large, the fry will get picked off before adulthood.

I would def get a pair...the chances of them crossing with another type of fish is slim if they have thier own kind.... besides they are entertaining...kinda like a saop or a reality tv show...lol... terrors are boring....beautiful but boring....
pic a male that is the same size of smaller than the famale....and pick a female with the reddest belly!!!! mixing pink and black convicts works too and adds alot of color to the tank....!!! they will end up being your favorite fish!

Thanks all :)

I got two last night (photos in the media thread) and I must say they are really cute little guys for the time being - cannot wait to watch them getting bigger!

Getting along so - so with everyone else in the tank. My Albino Oscars seem to think the little (hopefully) female could be a snack but she's so quick that they don't stand a chance!

Really happy that I went with the convicts.
