My convicts have been guarding a piece of driftwood with some holes in it for a about a week......well today after the big water change i noticed there was eggs in there............i've never bred anything before so i need a little help......how long will it be untill the eggs hatch? and also they are in a 75 growout tank with some fish that would eat the baby convicts......when should i move them into their own tank?.......thanks for the help............

What type of cons?

Water temp & pH will affect the time.

3-5 days to hatch. Then wigglers for 1-2 more days..

Hope this helps...

best to remove the other fish if you can & remove the parents a few days after the fry are free swimming.

The parents will take the wiglers & even fry into their mouths & may or may not eat them. usually they are just moving them arround. if other fish are present dont expect many to survive.

other fish are present and theres not way to remove them..........i can move the wigglers though......would that work? i was thinking either moving them to a much smaller tank by themselves or just get one of those floating breeder things so they can be isolated.......what would be a good move?

o yea they are just regular black cons i bought from petsmart a couple months ago and the water is at 79degrees and the ph is at 7.0

cant move the others then go ahead & move them to another tank, use water from the tank they are in..

Sponge filter or a sponge on the intake tube of a HOB.

I dont recommend breeder nets with egg layers.

Leave them in the tank then watch as the convicts attack anything that gets near the fry when they hatch. There are very, very few fish who will attempt to steal any of the convicts fry. The only fish I have ever seen successfully steal convict fry was a juvenile Red Devil who must have been real hungry, because he was attacked repeatedly afterward and I never witnessed it again.

well i left everything in the tank how it was......then two days later they moved the eggs to these pits they dug out in the sand........then they ate them the next day........i guess they might be successful later when they get more experienced.............
