So I recently decided to try to breed a pair of convicts for lmb food.
Yesterday I bought 1 male and 2 females to increase the chances of paring up, and then return the other female once I have a pair. But so far the male has been very, very, aggressive with the females. Chasing them everywhere and bullys one female close to his size more than the smaller one. Is this normal? How long will it take them to pair up? What are the signs that they will spawn? Thanks.

Oh, and they are in a 24 gallon high.

It's normal for them to fight. Get it time and they well breed.

How long have you had them? I had a pair start breeding within 2 weeks, maybe a week and half. Male was about 1.75" female maybe an inch. They've had 2 spawns in as many months, third spawn brought about wigglers. They also took that long to find a defendable spot for their eggs heh

Well, I've only had them less than a day lol. Never kept convicts, thier behavior is new to me. I had to take one of the females out, the male nearly killed her. The Male is about 2.5 inches or so, while the female I have in there now is about 1 inch, other he almost killed is 2 inches.

I believe he's testing them both to see if they're strong enough for him heh I noticed they'll both attack the 'odd con out' if they've both paired up.

All in my observance mind you, i believe theres more info specifically on convict breeding out there, much less on this board.

You can try putting a separator, my did that and the female put eggs all over it and the male did his business and then all the babies came along.

he is asserting his dominance...and before breeding takes place it typical for the male to harrass the female for a lil bit....give them a couple of days, but make sure he is not injuring her to bad...a lil nips and chasing is alright..pretty soon she will start burrowing and thats when you will know they will breed
