I have a 29g tank with a pair of small full grown convicts. The male is just over 4 inches and the female is around 2.5-3. Do I have room to add any more fish? Also, at the local Petco someone brought in a female blue convict (mine are black convicts) and they are offering it away for adoption saying its a juvenile Jack Dempsey. I've heard that convicts breed so readily that one male and two females isn't such a bad idea. I've also heard that 3 cons in a tank will kill the "odd man out". Does anybody have any definite info to help? Thanks for your time!

Well...since you have a male and a female I would say you could add maybe 1 more female convict. The chances of them spawning and killing the other tank mate are high.

I just shuffled mine around and have my con pair in the 26gal bow front. There's not one doubt in my mind that any other fish in there will not last 24 hours.

You think my male convict will spawn with the new one and kill his old mate or him and his mate would kill the new fish? Not that either scenario would be acceptable. I'm just wondering.

My male stuck with his old mate even though she was smaller. I don't know if that's typical or not though.

Well he will only breed with one female at a time, and during this time the pair will probably beat up the loner.

the male will only spawn with one female and any other fish in there a target

some fish will form "harems", one male with multiple females; I think gymnos are an example

from what I've read, convicts do not do this . . . I think you should stick with just the one pair and be content with that . . .
