How aggressive are Convicts if they are kept singly or are not breeding? I was planning to get some HRPs for my tank, but I would have to get them off of Aquabid or somewhere, but right now a LFS has some good looking Convicts in. I think female Convicts are quite nice looking, but I don't want a pair taking over my tank. If I got a female or two would they be too aggressive? They would be in a 90g growout tank for 6-12 months before going in a 300+g tank I'm building. Most the fish are 1-3 inches, with a few fish in the 4-6 inch range. The milder species in the tank are Severum, flier cichlid, spilurus, Thorichthys sp., and the bigger fish are Syns, some sunfish, Crassi Oscar and a (so far) well behaved female Carpintus.

Females aren't aggressive when alone. Just females can pair off also. To be safe I'd just get one unless you can separate them. Convict females are stunning. I always wanted a group of females

This is what I've always heard when researching them before I setup one of my tanks. I went with a female con and a firemouth of unknown sex. After a few months the con got too aggressive, so I had to re-home her.

A few months ago now that I have another bigger tank setup I decided to try a female con again. She is just as feisty as my first. She challenges a JD twice her size constantly, and doesn't back down from my firemouth's flaring.

She's currently in a growout with a kamfa flowerhorn. They're both about 2.5", but the flowerhorn is the dominant fish. I'll probably add the con back to my JD/FM tank in a few days again.

So a female may be aggressive, or may not be... I think I'll try it. If it doesn't work the LFS who has them will take her back and give me in store credit for what I paid.

Keep in mind that a convict is a Central American cichlid, and CA cichlids can and will readily hybridize with any other CA cichlid. This is especially true of convicts which will basically breed with anything. So even though you don't buy a male, she could easily pair off with any of the other CA cichlids you listed.
