Right now I'm breeding a pair of convicts in a 20gal tank. Its going fine.

Soon I'll have a 65 (already setup) and a 55 (working on it) with different communities of fish.

In the 65 I'm planning to keep 1 jack dempsey, 2 female convicts and 8 tiger barbs.

In the 55 I'm planning on 2 senegal bichirs & 2 pictus catfish.

has anybody bred convicts in similar situations? Ideally I think it would be cool to keep them in the 55 with the bichirs...they're being bred to feed them anyways :p I'd be worried that the convicts will have a pretty constant cycle of fry & eggs though and that they would ruin the sen's & pictus' lives keeping them stuck on 1 half of the tank.

Anybody have experience with this?

if u put the pair of in with the bichir and catfish the will kill or keep them stuck on 1 half of the tank...

When I was in fresh out of high school I had breeding convicts in a 55 gal with 4 Mbuna African cichlids (Elecrtic Yellow, Acei and I forget the other two types). and a common plceo.

If you are going do it USE CAUTION, some convict parents are more relentless then others.

This particular setup worked because the africans would stand their ground and the convicts only demanded a small section of the tank.

But I have a feeling if I tried that with my current Convict pair, the africans would get killed.

^ interesting. I may try letting it happen in my 65. My bichirs and cats are pushovers for the most part, but the Jack Dempsey would probably stand her ground just fine.

My biggest worry is that I wouldn't realize its not working until I've already lost one of my pets:\

yeah, that is the problem, it may appear to be working fine, but if one or both of the convicts views it's tankmates as a threat, it may do serious damage.

Also where the convicts decide to spawn may make a difference, If they spawn at one end it will be better than if they spawn in the middle.

Yeah...I'm just going to leave them alone for now. If I had a 5-6' 100+gallon tank I'd probably go for it. But in a 55 & 65 I just don't see enough space between them and my other fish.

Yeah, I have a 135g that I am setting up now, I am going to try to do a pair of Convicts, a pair of C. sajica, a pair of H. multispinosa, and maybe a pair of C. cutteri.

It will either work beautifully or blow up in my face. With my luck they will either get extremely combative during spawning or even worse, the conspecifics will pair up and I will end up with a bunch of Crypto hyrbids.
