My pair of black convicts have been digging pits in the sand for the last two days, but they haven't laid any eggs yet. So far there are four holes in the sand all about 2-3 inches deep and 4-5 inches in diameter. I know that the holes are being made by the cons because I have seen them digging them, but there has been no sign of egg-laying. Any idea as to if my convicts are planning a spawn soon?

If they havent bred theres something wrong with them.

The reason I ask is I've had them for 4 Weeks and no fry! :nilly: I just put a clay pot in their tank as it seems like the reason they are digging so many holes is that they can't find a suitable breeding area.

An easy way for convicts to breed, besides a flower pot...I Just put a bunch of slate down on the base of the tank, then i put the sand on top of the slate... then i put some slate leaned up against each other on the top of all the sand and other rocks... then the convicts dig out there favorite places to breed... I had a serious set of tunnels before i moved my tank...Good Luck.

Slate sounds like a good idea... A few minutes after I put the clay pot in my cons started digging around it and poking at it, so I'll see how that pans out first.

Woo Hoo! My cons spawned on the side of a rock on the 12th! My modem at home broke, so I had to wait until I got to work to tell you guys. The pair had dug their 9th hole at the base of the rock and then spawned a the side. I discovered the eggs while doing a water change. There only looks like there's about 75 eggs, but they all appear to be fertile. Mom is a great parent; she even chases the male away from the eggs and is barely eating. I'm expecing them to hatch soon, I'll keep you guys posted. I know there just cons but this is by first time breeding fish, so I'm pretty excited.

I had the same problem they were togerther for 4 weeks befor they breed but yesterday I saw some little ones next to my air bubble decor :headbang2 no pot or slate I never saw the eggs :naughty: .. How long before they start free swiming and how long do you wait before feeding to your other fish? I have a Oscar
