Convicts just laid eggs please help!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I believe they take 4-7 days to hatch, my convicts just paired up and are "cleaning out" their nests. You can take them out of the tank and put them into a grow out tank as soon as 5 days from what I have read on here. Or let the parents rear them if you like, they do pretty good. The babies like to eat powdered flake fish food and I have heard microworms.

Leave them in the tank, I find watching the parents take care of the fry very rewarding. It's really cool to watch them heard the fry around the tank.

My convicts just laid eggs!!! How long do they normally take to hatch? What should I do once they do??

Eggs hatch within 2-3 days........Usually I take the spawn out once they hatch.......Raising the spawn without the parents guarantees more fry will survive to saleable/tradeable size.........Put the wigglers in a 20g tank......The freshly hatched fish will soak their yolk sacks within 5 days.......Once the sacks are soaked, they become free-swimming fry.......When free-swimming, start feeding baby brine shrimp 3-5 times everyday for 2 weeks........After two weeks, cut the feeding down to 2-3 times a day.....The feeding schedule I quickly explained will have the fry grow at the quickest rate......Do 50% water changes everyday for the first 2 weeks.........

Leave them with the parents, they can take better care of them then you can. (nothing against you personally, it's just convicts should get the parenting award!) I just sit in front of my tank for hours watching the hijinks that go on. If my male goes over to investigate the flower pot on the other side of the tank, and is gone too long, the female quickly swims over and pecks him on the kisser. I guess as a signal to get over and do his fatherly duties!

As far as feeding, the parents will make sure their fry are fed. The male often plunges himself in the substrate and stirs up uneaten food. I bought Hikari First Bites, and I take a small cup, fill it with tank water, let the food sink and settle for a good 5 or 10 minutes, then use a turkey baster and suck it up then spit it out on top of the fry.

Good luck.:)
