I've been keeping convict cichlids for many years, and I have not seen anything like this before. One of my pairs raised a batch till the fry were around 8 mm long, then they abandoned and started another batch. My main tank has many roots, dead leaves, and rocks, so I figured some of the fry from the first batch would survive. While the parents were guarding the new eggs, I observed a loner from the first batch very close (a few inches from the eggs) and the parents ignored him. Now the second batch is free-swimming, and the by now 1 cm fry from the first batch is with them. He nipps his younger siblings from time to time, and follows the school. I know that multigenerational families form in the brichardi complex, but convicts are completely different. Does anyone have an explenation for this behavior, or has anyone noticed the same happen in their tanks?
