can someone direct me to a good care sheet or care sheets for convicts.:FIREdevil

29 gallon tank minimum IMO. Most people say a minimum of 20 gallons but I disagree. pH of about 7- 7.5. They like harder water. Very tolerable of poor water conditions but best to keep nitrates under 10ppm at all times as with any fish. Like a temp between 76-82. They can be put in Planted tanks as they aren't serious diggers, but only with hardy plants. Are very aggressive when paired up and do anything to prevent intruders from coming near their fry. Very good parents! Females have a large orange spot of the belly and will often be a little more colorful. Females top out at 3-4". Males will grow up to 8" but this is VERY rare most likely around 6" sometimes even less. They have large flowing fins and will develop nuchal humps on their heads upon maturity. Tankmates can be 3x the size of a Con and still back down from one. They can be kept with larger (up to 12" or so) tankmates including Midas, RD's, Freddies, JD's, GT's, and this list goes on and on. They don't really bother smaller tankmates too much but will chase. Very tolerant of abuse and it doesn't really phase them. They enjoy pellets as a staple diet. Although you should always feed a variety of foods. They are omnivores and will eat almost any food. These are very good cichlids to have and start with because of their nature and activity.

^^^I did not even read that and I agree lol they are cons and cross knows his stuff....

I agree with cross except I kept a pair very successfully in a 20 for years. I more recently kept a pair in a 26 bowfront.

that hits the nail on the head

How costly are 6+" convicts?
How long does it take for a convict to grow that big? I have a 4" male about a year old, spawning with salvini now, hes well settled in the 33g tank, with 3 malawi cichlids, a severum and pleco, he bullies everyone badly after he started spawning, so I had to separate the pair with a divider. I wanted to remove the salvini along with the africans leaving the severum with the con. So are there any chances that he can kill the severum about 3" now? I also wanted to add some tiger barbs along with them. So how should I do this? removing all the fishes, redecorating, adding tiger barbs, adding the severum and lastly adding the convict, what if I add a firemouth along with these?

yup:iagree: with this guy cross he knows his cons i have 3 breeding pair in a 60g and the all fight i also have a oscar in there a frontosa and a neddlefish lol and the tank is great
