ok heres another convict question
i just bought some
the female about 4 or 5 inches
and the male 2 and a half inches
can they breed in a tank with no heater?
its gona be a 10g tank
if not il breed them in a 55 but i have other fish in theyre thats why i dont wana throw em in there in the first place

depends on how cold the water is. But I can guarantee that water above 75 F will get them breeding. They can breed in a 10g

Seriously, just get a small heater for the 10. But honestly, that's too small, even for cons. Sure, they can breed in it, but they could also breed in my friggin coffee cup if I let em. That doesn't make it okay. A 20 long is good for con breeding.

people always brag about how easy it is to breed them
but sometimes they just dont breed
and i dont think theyre anything wrong with putting them in a 10 gallong
its actually a 12 gallong haha

I have got a 55g right now with only a jewel and a red peacock in it, if I threw in a few cons and they started breeding would that cause serious issues? Would the cons go ape$hit on the other fish in there or would the just guard their eggs and once I realized the eggs are in there I can take them out and put them in a 10g to grow large enough to be feeders? But I would always keep the parents in the 55g with other fish...

I think it would be fun to try, but I dont want two breeding cons to start knocking off my other fish...

If I started this this is how I would see it going, Plan A:

I would start by getting 4-6 cons. Put them in the 55g, wait till a pair forms. Take out the extras, non paired, and return to LFS. When the Con pair in the 55g breeds, take the eggs out into the 10g. Raise as feeders. Repeat. How does this plan seem?

If that plan is no good, then plan B:

Get 4-6 cons, put them in the 10g. When they pair, remove the rest and return to LFS. When they breed just leave the eggs in the 10g to hatch and grow to be feeders. At this point I have a question, would I leave the parents in there the whole time or would the eventually eat the fish as they got a little bigger to "feeder size" or can I leave the parents in there with the young all the time and just take the young out as I see fit.

dbz912: Dont mean to hijack or anything, I saw your thread and am curious too, just didnt want to start a brand new. I figured you probably have the same questions though too, basically.

1) I don't brag about the ease of breeding convicts. I complain about it. Too many aquarists end up with too many unwanted fish.:irked:

2) Sure, 10, or whatever, 12 gallons is fine for small convicts, but not for life. Con male can attain a maximum size of 7". 10 gallons of water is insufficient for a fish that size with a mate.

I've had convict breed and then their fry start breeding with each other at less than an inch. :nilly:
