is it ok if i put them in a ten gallon so they can be breeding and be seperated from all my fish?

@ what size will they breed at? and would i need a "breeding pair?" or just 1 male 1 feemale, also how can you tell male from feemale?

i had 2 breeding pair and it got so bad i had to throw all 4 out in the pond because the 29 was filling up with babies. my pond it ate up with con fry
