Looks like an interesting project, but would not be a true closed loop system, as the text seems to imply.
IMO:
-The fish wouldn't be able to produce enough waste for sustained plant growth. You'd have to add extra fertilizers.
-You would still need to do water changes to keep the water safe for the fish long term. All natural freshwater fish-bearing water bodies have natural processes that remove/replace water.
 
Seems pretty cool.
I actually use my aquarium water to water my house plants and in summer i also use it in my garden. Plants love fish poop.

You could just make it a JDM and you would have more than enough fertilizer. and yes water changes would always have to happen.
 
It shows great minds at work but a little too much for me.
 
I'm actually in the works of integrating my koi pond into my what will be a garden. When I do water changes the water will drain through those pipes, and then drain into the garden soil.
