somewhere
I have an empty 75g and 40 br, both which I would like to setup for some kind of herp. I'm open to all ideas, ideally something under $300.

I've considered red tail boa, carpet python, chondro, ackies... still not sure on what to do yet...

Thanks..

Do you want a handleable pet, or a look-but-don't-touch display animal?

Do you want animals that will live for life in those cages?

Do you want to breed them?

Do you care what their dietary needs are?

How much experience do you have keeping herps?

It sounds like you want fairly large specimen animals, but a 75 would be a great tank for a planted vivarium with smaller frogs or lizards. It could also a work for a large colubrid, such as a king, milk, corn, rat, or beauty snake. I think a redtail or coastal carpet python would outgrow either cage.

uromastyx, ackies wont work for long they need a lot of dirt and a lot of room

handleable is good, but a display animal would work

ideally, yes, but it doesn't have to.

Do you want to breed them?
not particularly

Do you care what their dietary needs are?
nope

about 4 years with some different snakes/rare frogs. now i jstu have a ball python right now

what about some colubrids like bull/ pine snakes? I would not put any arboreal species such as the chondros and carpets that you mentioned since breeder tanks are pretty flat.

Blood pythons would be neat to keep. what about an aquatic species of herp?

thanks for the suggestions bro. would the chondro work in the 75? that one isn't a breeder tank, just standard size (20'' tall)

now that you mention it, i am a big fan of blood pythons :headbang2 not sure if one would fit in the 40? i do like aquatic herps, at least aside from turtles. any suggestions of specific ones?

I'm not a fan of keeping high humidity herps in glass tanks. Custom enclosures are my cage of choice but there are lots of options out there for caging specific to chondros or other arboreal snakes. I've been lucky with my chondros in that they are pretty mild mannered, but that does take some patience to achieve for most owners. A chondro may not be the best choice if you aren't that experienced, young ones can be particularly difficult to feed. I would recommend doing a LOT of research first and then looking for one that is more mature and handleable. I wouldn't recommend them unless you have experience handling aggressive snakes, just cause you need to know how to read their behaviour.

Also, the 75 would not be large enough for a Carpet or a Blood python in the future, IMO. Have you considered a Blue Tongued Skink for the 75? Maybe a group of Crested Geckos for the 40? Or are you kind of set more on a snake?

You would really need to have a vertical tank for a chondro. I guess the 75 COULD work but I would not recommend it.

A blood python would be fine in the 75 for life since they are not particularly active snakes. They are also becoming more readily available to buy as well so you shouldn't have a problem getting it under $300.

I was going to recommend some turtles as well but there are also things like Greater sirens that would work well in a 40gal. you could also look at some semi aquatic lizards like water dragons or basilisks.

I'd definately like to get a chondro, but after more consideration this probably wouldn't be very well suited for my 75, I guess I'll just end up getting a custom tank or something for one. Don't blood pythons max at 5-8 ft? Would a male be fine in a 75 or would that still be to small? Otherwise, I would definitely consider a community of some type of rhac :headbang2

Great, thanks for the info. IF the blood python will be ok in the 75 for life (which is sounds like it will) I will go down that route. When you say I won't have a problem getting one under 300$, is that for an adult or juvie?

Thanks for all the help guys!
