I think this was labeled as a variant of the Lates niloticus... but I'm not sure.

I have the real nile perch in my tank right now, and doesn't look like that at all.

Maybe it's from a different river or lake system..

Yeah, that is a real Nile perch. They get that bright marble gold and black pattern when the get bigger. Mine looked like yours ming when I first got him, but now he is larger at 7" and he looks more like this fish. Also it depends on your tank substrate, if he is in a tank with light colors then he will look faded out. Mine will go from faded out to bright gold and black when he gets excited.
