Hi. I'm looking for some cool, different, gravel substrate that is generally less than 5 mm in diameter for a tank with a black background. I have a male black belt cichlid that will be the showpiece in the tank. I'd like a fairly natural look, but gravel that has some different colors.

If you can't name a specific one, can you show me a site that has a good selection?

better buy white sand or gravel... but sand is the best! Black fish/background looks great with white substrate... :D

I can get white pool filter sand for $10.00 a bag. Just didn't want to go with the pre-filter sponges again.

I just got some white pool filter sand with a black background and I love it. The only bad thing is poop shows up on the white sand. What I did was to get a Koralia 850 gph circulation pump (the kind with a magnet) and put it at the back/ bottom of my tank. I turn it on a few minutes each day and it stirrs the poop up so that my canister filters can suck it up. Works very well, I probably wont have to vaccuum it again. I will post a picture later when I get home. I may hook it and my lights up to a timer in the future

heres a pic, you can see the pump in the lower left of the tank

Good idea. Love your fronts!

Nice frontosas. They're one of the few rift lake cichlids I'd actually like to own.

No canister filters then?

I just put some Estes ultra reef sand in my 240...comes in a bunch of colors and is small like 3m s grade but isnt a pain to wash or get. I got black...love it...doesnt kick up and float. BUT ittakes a little work to get it in the tank and sunk the first time. It will want to float but its fine for me now.
