I watched my ornate go up to the surface to get a gulp of air but instead of sticking his snout out he arched the back of his head up and spread his gill plates to take in air. Just a kinda cool thing to randomly see.

Ever see one relelase a small bubble from the same area?If so then you have seen them exhale thru their spiracle valve-Anne

I have 2 scientific papers one claims the spiracle valve is used for exhausting air,The other claims the valve can be used for both intake and exhausting of air.I had a P.p.polli that displayed the same behavior as the bichir above I never saw it gulp air just a gentle ris turn the head down open the gill covers to the atmosphere then dive back to the bottom.A little later this little bubble would be released.Anne

Weene how big is the senegal?
