So-Cal
SO i have a buddy that has a pond on his property in southern California, its ABOUT an acre or two, and has a max depth of about 20feet. It has plenty of differnt kinds of structure, open grassy areas, rocky areas, sandy areas, and along the shoreline theres plenty of reeded areas as well as open areas.
He wants to stock it for fishing eventually, but heres the catch, he dosnt want the usual bass/sunfish/crappie/catfish/trout fishing, but somthing more exotic to fish for. Along the lines of cichlid kind of stuff it dosnt need to be extremely large fish or fish that are good fighters, just out of the ordinary fish!
The weather around the area is fairly warm/hot all year, in the wintertime it MAY get down to the low 40s for periods.
The pond is man made on private property and is not connected to anyother body of water, so there is no chance of fish escaping anywhere to destroy another body of water or species.

SOO
What kind of fish would be hardy enough for this climate...it would be warmer water most of the year, the winters arnt to rough in socal.

Were thinking along the line of somthing like Convict cichlids/Oscars/Red Tail cat?? hahaha
For reals though guys!! we just need ideas for fish that arnt going to die off in the winter.

:headbang2

Oh and im heading back to that area in about 2 weeks, and i will try to get pictures then if possible.

Edit:and were also thinking, instead of crayfish, maybe freshwater crabs?? if not at least the blue crays.

mayb some kind of catfish? or mayan? not sure

Yeah we would love to put some sorta cool cats in there, somthing along the lines of an RTC or TSN, and mayan cichlids would be wayy cool.
Were just at a loss of what would winter and what wouldnt.

YEa the winter rlly restricts it

Convicts are all I can think of.

It would be great to get a big breeding population of convicts in it, does anyone know what the lethal temp is for these guys??

So does anyone know the lethal temps for any of these fish?
Jaguar Guapote cichlid?
Jack Dempsy cichlid?
Red Bellied Pacu?
Oscar?
Mayan cichlid?
Texas cishlid?

These are just some ideas off the top of the head, these would take the place of the panfish in the pond.

You know air temps in the winter, but what is the water temp? Average? High? Low?
You will need this information before stocking not just the lowest nightly temp!

exactly. a 20ft deep pond is going to take more than a couple nights to get cold deep down. so you need to actually know the water temp. it would especially help if you could SOMEHOW (no idea how) get a temp reading at the mid-bottom of the pond/lake.

without knowing that, i wouldent reccomend very much in the way of "exotic" besides maybe pacu and RTC seeing as their tough as nails, and can take some lower temps if need be. otherwise, your limited to natives, and koi for the most part
