I have a 120 gallon with parrot cichlids, firemouth, rams, giant danios, SAE, various plecos and a few small fish.

Obviously I can't keep a red tail cat or a gulper or anything, but what cool catfish are not super voracious fish eaters and can live in a 120 for life? I know there are Raphael Cats but I'm hoping for something more interesting. I LOVE M. irwini, but I know they grow giant.

Oh, and I'm not a big fan of Synodontis

My choices would be species that are not nocturnal and therefore won't hide away all day long.My harlequin lancer is quite active in my 180 after it's had a few to settle in.

Pimelodus pictus?

I'd filter CateLog on Planet Catfish by size and study the hits. For instance you can start with catfish with Standard length (SL; meaning without the tail fin) no longer than 6".

Cool thank you, I didn't know you could do that on Planet Catfish!

Someone local to me has a 10" M. uranoscopus, think I could put one in a 120 gallon for a few years until it grew too big?

I think so. You should have no problem finding a proper home for a large irwini later on. They are rare at large sizes and wanted. Their behavior is like that of a raphael, except they grow much larger of course.

ive kept pictus in every tank ive had. love the little guys, super active and not too bad about eating small fish. Mine never touched danios, but any small tetras were gone. id suggest checking out hoplo cats too, kind of funny looking but super personable
