near but far
I know theres chillers out there but, was wondering if there are any cheaper ways to cool my tank? It's a 300g tank as of right now tank is at almost 87 degrees and ideal temperature is about 82 degrees.

Run a fan to blow across the surface of the water. Evaporation cools the water. Where is the tank? I'm guessing it's not inside.

I agree with the above it depends what is causing the heat in the first place...

If ambient room temp is high, then a fan isn't really going to do too much ime... you might get lucky and have it drop a degree or two, but not too much below that... not to mention, you can't control how much it will cool down the tank...

Chillers, especially for larger tanks, is pretty much one of the only ways i know of to keep a tanks temp down and stable... other methods such as keeping ice-packs in the tanks etc do work, but only for a short duration and naturally causes a lot of temp fluctuations...

If you're worried about the purchase cost of a chiller then there are plenty of diy desidns floating around the web. Running costs can be high though

Tank is driven by an mag 18 & got a fx5 on for extra gph from high stock. Lights are not on everyday and if on, only on for a few hours (Florescent dual bulb fixture on one side and a led on the other side). Never had a problem with the tank being too hot before and hence the question. Ambient temp around mid 80's during the day and around low 80's at night. Thanks for the replies guys! I'm more worried about the running cost of the chillers than purchasing cost. Tank is indoors btw

Well, to be fair, unless the heat is prolonged over a fairly long time i guess the fan method maybe worth a try...

In my case, i found adding a chiller was the only option for my Crystal Red Shrimp tank since in the summer while im at work room temps reach up to 29'C with 27'C and over as an average, and fans just couldnt cut it, and runnin my AC was costing me more than the running cost of a chiller

I run a 20 inch box fan right on top of my 560. Just pull the cover back and blow it in. Then use a temp controller for the fan.
The fan is the cheapest way to start.
