cooling down water

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
How about raising the light an inch or two?. Also, Maybe leave the lids open. Evaporation can be a great cooler.

i raised the light about 1.5in above the glass, just used little 2x strips on each end of the light. this also seemed to reduce the amount of green slime that accumulated on the underside of the glass directly below the light. :)

thanks for the help

Howdy,

You need to cool down your lights somehow. Maybe direct a fan on them, or prop them off the tank a bit to allow air circulation underneath. Possibly even install a fan (e.g. computer store) in the light casing. My Coralife lights came equipped with one, and it does wonders when it's on.
But as others said: Check your heater setting first ;)

Think yourself lucky you dont live in Aust, we have to battle tank temps most of the summer! In Melb we generally get a few days in a row close to or over 105f and so are used to trying to keep tanks cool! Basically the tank will heat up to whatever temp the room is at, so without lowering your room temp it will be constant battle.

One of the best simple ways to keep the tank cool is turn off the lights, take off the cover glasses and have a fan blowing across the top of the water. There are also methods like sitting a canister filter in an esky full of ice, putting ice in your sump, hanging a wet towel on the outside of the tank with a fan blowing on it... plenty of ways, be creative!

But 85 isnt really too hot for tropical fish as long as you keep the water oxygenated as best as possible. My temperate water fish tank got to 85 for a few days last week with no dramas, as long as it isnt permanently there.
