I have some pieces of 1.5 inch copper pipe and am curious if there would be any negative effects of using them for caves and tunnels.

I agree , not likely a problem.

yeah I didn' think so but thought i'd ask since I heard something about a copper medication for the fish that is questionable.

well, the problem I could see is if you do polish it, the chemicals it would release, not to mention the pipe it's self may leach heavy metals into the system. I would imagine that if you stay on top of your water paramiters, you should be fine. But I do not know. Give this thread a little more time to see if anyone else has more to add, you may just have brought up a great topic. I know for a fact people use PVC and clay very frequently. But metals, not so much.

Small amount of copper is toxic to saltwater fish. I would be cautious in a fresh water tank because large amounts are going to be toxic. Copper oxidizing and breaking down in say fifty gallons in your tank is going to cause a much higher concentration than water flowing through your house plumbing.

If you use salt at all it will hasten the corrode factor...IDK...seems sketchy...I would put it in a tank with some goldfish for a month or two. I have heard it can be toxic but then again, you can add copper as a med...hhmmmmmm. Theres sooo many other things you could put in the tank....good luck with that.

True. But meds work because they are toxic. Hopefully they are used in a concentration that is toxic enough to kill the parasite or bacteria and not the patent. A lot of fish are killed quicker by the cure than the problem.
