is coraline algae a dark red to purple color? i have a good cover of this stuff on my bed rocks in my tank. i hear it is good to have it means a healthy tank . but i also have green hair on the back of my tank a good coating waving along in the current maybe to many nutrents in the water?

Hiya dei, welcome to MFK. Coraline algae comes in several shades of red and purple, the main give away is it's gritty feel instead of the soft, slimy feel of red slime algae.

The purple/red corraline algae is good, do you have any tangs in the tank? They would quite happily snack on the green hair algae.
What do you have in your tank at the moment ( fish and inverts? )

Steve :)

not a good sign...

snails lasted a month or so i got 6 or 8 of them they did good job then died off they didnt starve i got a refuge on this thing it made the coraline come out more now its been on for about 6 months now and it has green hair in it now 20 lbs of kent marine bio sediment in it and bio balls 250 gal hr pump

If you've got live rock in your tank get rid of the bio balls. you don't need em as long as you've got lots of rock. or not very many fish. Depending on what kind of green algae you have, a tang may not work. I've run into several types of nuisance algae before and none of them are fun. One particular type of green algae is called brypsis and you can soak it in fresh water, leave it out to dry for weeks in the sun, put the rock back into the tank and it will come back like a firestorm. Here are some pics of nuisance algae that i've had, and contrary to popular belief, tangs don't eat all algae. They do however really like the pretty stuff and don't like the ugly stuff.

the final picture look at the green stuff by the clams that's the stuff that we had to scrub off and a toothbrush didn't work too well.
