only thing I can think of is possibly algae growing in it. But ive never used those.
Does it still work?
 
It still worked, but I couldn't tell if it was impaired at all. I don't think it is algae, because I don't have any plants and only a single fish in a bare aquarium (in addition to filtration, of course).

not having plants usually means more algae as nothing is competing for nutrients, more plants = less algae IME.
sounds like the wooden air "stone" just got water logged as wood does. wet wood always goes dark and it can look almost black.
as long as it still works then i dont see you having anything to worry about. you could always email the manufacturers and ask them.
 
Can anyone confirm that wooden airstones (coralife in particular) can become blackened because of algae? Note that although the pictures are a bit blurry, it is definitely black, not just a darkened brownish wood color one would get from water logging wood for a few days, so I don't think simply being in water could be the cause.

I did email the manufacturers but no response yet :( Thanks for the suggestion.
