Forgive my ignorance on this, but I've never had a tank that had the overflow compartments. I'm in the process of upgrading my 125g to a 265g, which has this.

What exactly is it for? I saw on Dr Foster's that I can buy filtration thing that fits there

Again, I"ve been keeping fish for 15 years, just don't know anything about this....

I'm also getting a FX5 for it, and it comes with a sump tank and pump

BTW, it'll be used for freshwater

The drilled overflow setup is for use with a sump, so if the tank is pre-drilled which it sounds like it is, you'll have to use a sump. When your water level gets to the top of the overflow "wall" it falls behind that wall and into the sump tank below.

You could use the overflows to feed the canister (and other canisters that you will later add). You could also use your 125 for your sump. The options and opportunities would almost be endless.

True, chompers, you can use it with a canister, didn't think about that.

Ok, so as long as I don't fill up the tank up to the water line where it would overflow, then I'd be ok until I get it all set up?

Reason why I'm asking is because I won't have much time to set up the canister, and the sump as I'll have to get the fishies back in there

I did read up a way to rig up the canister tubing and such through the overflow departments, but this will also be my first canister filter.....I'm *slowly* upgrading

Would it be easier for me to get that accessory kit that Dr Foster's sell to assist with the canister?...link below...or is that mainly for saltwater?

I read that I can also use the sump to hook up the UV sterilizer easier...not sure on doing that...

BUt, an exert from the email about the tank I'll be getting, which is a 265g...."the filter is a 30 gal tank with bio-balls and then you just add pads to where the water goes into the filter."

Is that all I have to do, other than hook up a powerhead filter in it? WHere do I get more bio ball pad?

Included a pic of the sump it comes with

That sump is pretty small for that size tank. It will work, but for a first sump it is really small. You stand a higher risk of overflowing it. Measure the length and width of both the sump and tank for me.

The pump will need to be matched to the plumbing that you have, so I'll need you to measure the inside diameter of the plumbing at the bottom of the overflow boxes.

You can get the filter pad at any fish store. What a lot of people do is use quilt batting from a fabric store (or Walmart). There are two thicknesses and you want the thicker one. I use two layers, or one layer with Poly-fill.

I don't have the tank in my possession. We're going to go look at it on Sunday.

If it didn't have the overflow compartments, there would be NO issue with me buying the tank. Now, because I don't think I want to have to deal with using a sump, etc, at this time I may not buy the tank. I won't have the time to set up anything elaborate either as my fishies will be in several tubs throughout the house while transferring them from the 125g to the bigger tank

So, either way I go, I HAVE to utilize the overflow compartments....Is there a way I can "cork the holes".....or hook up the FX5 to the overflows ( I don't have that in my possession yet either).

I feel so helpless on this matter
