Hey I'm thinking about getting a ray. My lfs has one about a 4'' disc width. It looks like a Urolophus halleri though, a cold water species. But the owner said it's a warm water ray. They said it came from Baja. My water temp gets to be around 82 degrees during the day and 80-81 during night. They can get in yellow caribbean rays but they are $120...way to much for me. I appreciate your help thanks.

Some backgorund info on my tank. I have a 125gal (72''x18'') with a 30gal sump and fuge. An Aquamedic skimmer. Some powerheads, heater, and carbon. The fish I have are a volitan lion and a porcupine puffer. Now I've heard puffers are fin nippers but here's the catch. The puffer never bothers the lion and never touches the hermits or the starfish. He mainly stays up on the surfaces and watches me. At night when the lights go off he splashes around and makes grinding noises....guess he hates the dark lol. I have rocks on both sides of the tank and the middle section open. The sand I have is argonite sugar fine sand and reef sand (more course). I have been getting the reef sand out very successfully.

Personally i wouldn't add a ray to your tank. #1 because the ray could swim into the lion and get stung, & #2 it not a matter of if with the puffer its a matter of when, puffers like to nip at anything still. And while the rays spend much of their time flat on the bottom, puffers like to nip at their eyes, disk, and tail.

I'm not worried about. I just don't like people who have negative things to say and always say it's not going to work. No one even answered my MAIN question. This site is too helpful thanks alot.

Well - yes the California Stingray(U. halleri) - is found around Baja & the Gulf of California. Even though it's considered a cool water species - it range(from California to Panama) suggest that it can easily stand water temps in to the mid- upper 70's. But I personally believe that lower 80's would be pushing it too far.

Given your tank's temperature of lower 80's - the Cortez is a better choice.

Also Elasmofreak is right in his suggestions, - Puffers & rays don't mix well. That just trying to give helpful - and important need to know info.

Personally if you really want a ray - I would suggest getting another tank(unless you already have a 2nd tank set-up). Then either put the ray in that tank or if you put the ray in 125, move the lion & puffer to the other tank.
