I was doing a wc today and decided to clean out the cannister filter. What a surprise that was when I started to remove the media trays. 2nd tray has a 1.5" cory flopping around, so we grab a net and start to pour the water out of the filter body. We found 6 more, 3 albino and 3 regular bronze. They never survive past the egg stage in the tank itself so this was a pretty cool find for us all

That's pretty cool they survived.

I agree. 1 is almost 2 inches long but very skinny. I'm now not sure about having a cannister if I've got to clean it out every couple weeks lol. Would hate to find a meat grinder instead of fry, even tho I'm sure that may have happened also idk

Filter cories!

A local messageboard years ago we had a whole series of people asking to identify fish they'd found in their filter. Prompted the term "Filter guppies"

Well I hope this is the last of them at my place guess its time for a prefilter sponge...
Tbh I didn't think this was possible, especially at their size. They look unusual as well

The more important issue is how they are getting inside the filter. Usually they get in via an intake. I never have this prioblem becuase i used prefilters on all of my filters (except sponge filters of course).

My first pleco breeding tank I had a special set-up/ U plumbed a Hot Magnum so the return was a spraybar across the top left end of the tank. I ran a hose from the intake across the bottom of the back glass, jury rigged and elbow and then had a sponged ATI prefilters along the loer tight end glass,. It was a bit flimsy and I discovered the the elbow disconnected from the prefilter a few times before I fixed that.

Not long after I pulled the filter to clean it in the kitchen sink.removed the micron filter from it and poured the water into the sink and began to clean the filter. I happened to glance down ay the drain and inside the stopper were about 10 baby zebra plecos. This happened again two weeks later. I rescued the fry both times, fixed that elbow issue and it has never happened again.

Plecos and corys often like to swim into current. I had to abandon my first undergravel filter when I discovered baby swordtails and pandas corys under the plate.

Yep need to order prefilters. Only thing is I hate them, the sponge is always to fine and clogs up all the time, oh well time to shop around. I have never saw any fry inside the tank so I'm not sure if the eggs or the fry were sucked up. Still seems impossible for them to live between 2 and 4 weeks inside there and their body is shaped kinda odd.

I just read your story on AC about the UG filter and all the cory and swordtail fry lol

Yea I've covered the cannister intake with a pre filter sponge. I've still got 6 left, but lost one of the albino a couple days after discovering them. The bronze colored ones are very dark with a deep rusty colored red along the back and dorsal fin. (I think its the dorsal) So my garbage babies are much more attractive than the parents lol

Not unusual for fry to get sucked into a filter early on. Really cool find too.
