850 gallons of salt!!!!!!????
i thought that set up was only 900 gallons?
that's like 3000 gallons worth of salt :) :D

it depends on what you want to do.
IMO IO and reef crystals are you really ever need. IO for FO anf FOWLR, RC for reefs

Have to agree completely with BigGourami here...I have used a few different salts over my time keeping marine and the only salt i have "never" had to buffer has been Reef Crystals...I even recomend this to people keeping a FOWLR tank as it adds great stability and trace elements..Yes, you may pay more to start off with when buying it, but, look at it in the long run. if you went for one of the cheaper know brands, like IO for example, how much are you going to be spending on suppliemnts and additives to buffer the elements to a good level? all that extra spending would end up costing you more than buy Reef Crystals at the start...

Just an opnion of course...

i thought Ph issues resulted from wastes in the water.

I get buckets of RC delivered to my door for $35ea, from Drs Foster & Smith. They don't have extra weight charges. The coupon code: DODGE (all caps) might still be good, for an extra 15% off.

Everything I read mentions RO water. What are the advatages to using it?

RO filters out the "Crap" in the water. You'll have an easier time keeping you chemistry stable, but it's not required by any means. For our main tanks, we dechlorinate city water, add Instant Ocean mix and call it good. Reef tank, I'd do RO to keep metals, phosphates and all that under control.

By the way, if you are doing a bigger tank, look at buying in bulk. We only pay like $.09 a gallon with how much we buy at a time.

I use RC & still dose alk & Ca daily, for my reeftank.
