I was fishing in the Rio Parismina in Costa Rica and caught a bunch of the cichlids below on small floating Rapala lures while waiting for the ocean to calm down for tarpon. I thought they would look great in a tank; anyone know what they are:

my first thought from the first pic was black belt, but the second pic threw me off a bit. I just did a little bit of reading on The Cichlid Room companion though and the only member of the Vieja/Paratheraps group that is native to Costa Rica is the black belt (Vieja maculicauda). So, unless it's a non-native fish (which if it is it could be some type of hybrid) then it must be a Black Belt.

i agree .. i thought at frist they was balck belts to lol till i had a better look

Pretty cool looking whatever it is.

They sure look a lot better in the wild than the black belts I've seen in stores. Too bad I couldn't ship them back. I even caught both members of a spawning pair (male is pictured) under a log, but I let all of them go.

that is a very good looking fish
