I just picked up a Costa Rican Dovii to grow out and I've heard, and read, some information about these guys I found hard to believe. Apparently they have different body structures and mouth shapes despite the proximity of Costa Rica to Nicaragua. Any knowledge of the differences that an expert could explain to me would be appreciated, I could easily see and understand a color difference but I am surprised to hear about the physical differences. I'd appreciate it if I could get this straightened out.

Thank you very much. It's really surprising to hear they vary so much. Can't wait to see this little guy grow. I have a feeling it might turn into the grim reaper as it progresses through the tanks. Good thing I always have dividers at the ready.

Believe it or not...Physical structures are different, there is another thread on this, I'll post the link.
Hello i wanted to ask does the regular costa rican still have xantic gene in it ? If i breed my red dovii female with a regular costa rican dovii will xantic gene come out ?

Another interesting thread about this, including some pictures - https://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/threads/which-dovii-costa-rican-or-nicaraguan.312370/.

I think the outcome is that Nicaraguan Dovii are more streamlined, purple-blue in colour, where as the Costa Rican Dovii are bulkier, tend to have a bigger nuchal hump and have a yellowish golden sheen on their body. Although that being said I think there's two different catch locations from Costa Rica, one being the yellowish golden colour (Rio Heredia I think) and the other being blue a bit like a Nic.
