We just had a run in with what I suspected was cotton mouth disease. It all started when two of my gouramis had their mouths covered in what looked like a fungus. One of then had white patches on his tail fin. I had a baby angel die the day before but I have not had a lot of success with angels and attributed it to stress from being a baby in a new tank with a lot of other fish. My tank is a well established 60 g tank with good filtration and regular water changes. I use salt to keep things right and feed the fish good quality food. I do not have an excesive amount of fish in there so overcrowding is not a concern. This thing came from not quaranteeing some new fish that I bought at Pet Smart.
My actions:
Apparently, cotton mouth is to a community tank what the bubonic plague was to Europe! So I euthanized the two affected fish by putting them in the freezer. Then I crushed two 500mg (1000mg load dose) capsules of Cipro and threw them in there. I removed the carbon filters and proceeded with 500mg per day for the next 3 days. 50% water change and new filters. Everything looks good so far.
Any thoughts?
