Could a jd go with a fm in a 55g?

im going to go ahead and say no, jds get way too big to be even alone in a 55g, if you really want to add another firemouth, i suppose you might be able to get away with it, though you might just want a convict or two.

what?? i thought that jds got a max of 10". I thought a fish that MAXS at 10" (i havn't seen one that big) would be fine in a 12" wide tank.

Short term with juvi's, yes. Like Le Patron said, a JD alone would be kinda cramped full grown ina 55 gallon.

It would be fine alone, but still kinda cramped. And at that point having other tank mates too, they probably will be eliminated.

I've seen 12" jacks, but not bigger I don't think...and a 1' jack is a pretty old guy.

You could probably do it depending on the fish, some FM's can be a little weak compared to a JD, others not. Worth a shot but be ready to separate.
