Here , there and every where
Hi ,

I am new , I have been offerd a silver arowana for 20 pounds what is around 5" long from a mate of mine . I am wondering how long i can keep him in a 55g 4 foot by 13"( wide) by 18" with a pleco .

Also what tank would i need for him in the future ?

I am not looking to go into anything over 8foot this would be the biggest im thinking of going , there are some nice 8 foot by 2foot by 2foot on Ebay what I could get for around 200 - 300 pounds what im willing to pay , as the missues wont want anything huge in the living room.

Also what could i keep him with , ive seen some oscars they look nice , as I dont want a huge tank with an arowana and a plec in there , it wouldent look to good unless i spent aload on plants and bogwood.

Ive keep koi and a large wels catfish for years and I moved house and sold them.
I have been thinking about buying Tropical fish for a while now , and now selling the koi and catfish , this has give me the chance to. the missus likes the arowana , but then she says she dosent want big ugly fish in the tank , we have both sat and looked through some of these formal and this is the one we liked the most .

We have also been looking on youtube there is lots of fish on there , we like the catfish , I think they was called the feather fin synodontis if i am right they look nice and like little fattys , we are going to look around the pet shops friday and see what we can get after we pick up the fish tank thursdays morning , I am trying to leave the tank for a while before adding fish but I think I might add some things called Black sharks , I have read up on these and they say they can live with fish like the arowana fish.

The tank I am getting has a fillter i think it was called a fluval 205 exturnal also a 300w heater and a bubble pump with it also a light unit that needs a new light though.

If you could give me some advice on what to put the arowana with , Oscar ,Black shark and the feather fin catfish me and the missus would be very greatful .

Also I will upload some pictures when I get the arowana and his freinds , if I get some freinds for him .

Meany thanks

A few months he is ok in the 55. But the 8 foot by 2 foot tank you are thinking about is more like it. And it will need that as an adult. A 300 gallon is ideal.

you ask this in the wrong section, try the arowana forum.

Hi,

So i would need an 8 foot tank atleast could i have one around 6 - 7 foot ?

Or would the arowana fish need that room for when hes bigger , I read they can get 2 foot max size , is this true ? As i have seen being ones on here .

And how meany months i should be gettin a bigger tank by 3 months time.

meany thanks

I think 3 months you will be ok. I'd try for the biggest tank possible. Some people keep them in less than 300 gallons. 6-7 footer might be alright. They can get between 2-3 feet long.

Thank you for heloing me on this , what tank mates would you reecomend for him ? ive just been looking after i took my eyes off the koi  there was a large arowana there around 2 foot long it was temting but ino i cannot house him at this moment, also ive seen the oscar fish they are nice aswell i saw some pangassius catfish , but they get large these were only 3" long and very fat , im not sure if he would eat the arowana if he grow to fast. I also seen a peru catfish think thats there name marbely colour with long wiskers but cannot find any information on them, he as around the 14 inch mark , i would love a baby one.

Any tank mates would be great realy as i dont just want an arowana and pleco in my tank.

thanks

I hope those oscars aren't too big, it could mean trouble for your aro. IMO silvers should be a least 10" before being mixed with cichlids and even then the cichilds should only be 1/2 the aro's length.

With proper care your aros will get much larger then 24". There is a member here that has a 33" silver aro in a 6x2x2' tank. IMO a 30" wide by 8' long tank would be much better suited. Though if you are not planning on keeping the aro the 8x2x2' tank would be fine and last maybe 3 to 4 years.

8' is plenty sufficient length. I would advise going 3' wide. The depth is not so important

good luck
