So I asked this question a while back and didn't really get a solid answer, so I'm taking another crack at it.

Here are my tap water parameters: comes out of the tap at 7.8 pH, but settles down to 7.4 after about 12 hours. GH is 7 and KH is 9.

I am looking for pretty much a "yes" or "no" answer here. Any "might works" will be considered a "no" since I would rather not risk harming the fish if there isn't a good chance it will work (and by "good" I mean at least 90% sure it will work).

They probably wont breed in that water, but it wont be bad. Just make sure to keep the water in the mid 80's.

At some point I would probably want to try and breed them, but at this pout I just want to make sure they aren't going to fade and die on me. I can get an RO unit in a few years when I want to try breeding them.

I think you'll be fine. We haven't kept acuticeps but have kept mapiritensis and daemon in our water with no problems. I think RO would be a great idea to stimulate their breeding.

I do know of a fellow MFKer keeping acuticeps in 6.5-6.8 and they are thriving.

HTH...

What are the water parameters you have kept daemons in? I don't have access to the space and materials I would need to make a black water environment, which is what I would need for them. I have read acuticeps are from both black and clear water, but HITH and other disease these fish are prone to occur almost exclusively in clear water conditions.

7.5 right out of the tap. Weekly 75% water changes. Added peat and some leaves to the filter for the blackwater effect, but water only got down to 7.2.

Just keep the water clean and warm ;-)

Thanks for the feedback.

I have been toying with the idea of getting some leaf little, a ton of driftwood and/or some peat to lower the pH to the 6.8-7.0 range. Just enough that the fish don't get a pH roller coaster ride, but make the water a little more comfortable for them.

I put bags of peat in my filters and had multiple almond leaves in the tank. It was a nice tannin tint. It didn't drop the pH as one would think, but the colors of the daemons were more brighter in blackwater-ish conditions - compared to not.

Peat, leaf litter, and driftwood won't alter your water much if it has a high buffering capacity. What are the gH and kH? If you're using Florida tap water I'm guessing it's moderate to hard, so peat and driftwood won't do anything unless you run it through RO.
