ive never ran a SW setup so im pretty blind as to what i need for a basic fowlr setup. im thinkin 40lbs of live rock, a couple powerheads, sand, and ???
do i need a protien skimmer? how much lighting will i need(no corals). could i use an ac110 filled with live rock as well?

would i be able to keep a snowflake eel in this tank? 36"x18" footprint, and if so/not what else would be cool?

40 brdr will work great for a tank-

The moray will out grow a 40 brdr.So no no there....Many other choices in fish-Just watch overall size-Unless your one not to keep your fish very long...
You cansearch the salt section I'm sure for DIY mods for Ac's-They can be found all over or just google it....
Protien skimmer wont be a must-But it is a nice added feature for An FOWLR setup-
Basic lighting will do-Corals will need the light....I only run a 3 tube 24 watt light setup over my 40 gal reef setup...It works great...

Be sure to keep the water level down below the edge about 2". I lost 2 of mine to climbing out of the tank. My SF eel is growing quickly & as soon as I can catch it, it's moving out of my 40g to a 180g.

Lighting really doesnt mean anything with no corals, so whatever you like for your viewing pleasure. The ac110 with the liove rock will be perfect, and you may also want to add a bag of ChemiPure and some filter floss. If you think you will keep up with the weekly water changes, I dont think you need a protein skimmer, but I like to have one just in case I am really busy or lazy. IMO a protein skimmer on any tank less than 55g is more of a convenience than a necessity. It helps, but with all the other expenses out there for a saltwater tank Id try and keep up with water changes and add a skimmer when you increase the bioload.
