the ones along the coast in West Africa (Guinea etc.) are NOT bichir bichir. i know the Aqualog book says they're distributed there, BUT all of those LIVE specimens in the book are Guinea lapradei. The Aqualog book erroneously describes Guinea lapradei as bichir bichir.

As for the countries near Central Africa (particularly surrounding lake chad), i'm not convinced about that yet. Reason is the same reference also lists lapradei as distributed there. Given sometimes how the two can look similar and the wide distribution of lapradei there (e.g. Nigeria), i'm open to the possibility of misID.

P. bichir bichir are for sure found in East/North East Africa, which narrows down the list to only a few countries. Another species for sure found there are senegalus (a few have been imported in japan along with bichir bichir). i think P. endlicheri endlicheri are supposedly found there as well, but haven't seen those yet. And thats it from there, from what we know.

The info came from fishbase not the book guess they boo bbo'd

fishbase lists lake chad and tributaries, which are the ones i said i'm not convinced yet. i only came across western africa in the aqualog book.

why doesnt someone go there and catch some?
thats what the japanese did. they sent a team there to investigate and find the fish, with the help of the local people, and obviously they succeeded. To export in larger quantities, i believe there's a japanese company that happens to have operation in a neighboring country that handles that, at least thats the one i read about. There are also limitations on where you can go and catch them. Of the several countries where they're found in, i think some may have export restriction, some are war zones. In addition, it's not like you can just go to any part of the river or lake in that region and guarantee to find them, and the place may not be easily accessible. So it's not easy, simple or cheap.
