behind my iMac.... Southampton UK.
pretty self explainitory, id love to get a 12" pleuro to go in with the 12" pair of aurantimaculata im gwetting at the weekend... could it work?

I have no idea so my thought on this isnt worth more then the dirt stuck under my nails, but, arent they from two different regions? Dont pleuros need trop temps year round and auruntis need a cooler period?

hi nathan , allough your aurantis will indeed tolerate tropical temps as many people have kept them full tropical over extended periods, what ytemps they are compleatly diferant , they are out either hanging about or swimming most of the day and the colours are more intense. i have tried boou will find is an auranti kept at tropical temps does not behave the same as one kept at sub-tropical temps. at tropical temps they are quite slow fish and tend to hide most of the time in caves ect , if no cave is provided then they constantly dig the substrate to try and hide , also there colours are not as bright ,esp the blues . when they are kept at sub-tropical temps they are a much better fish.

mixing them , you must be prepered to loose fish if you want to try it , as you know i mixed mine some time ago , but it is allways going to be a gamble , and a 12" pleuro is going to be the best part of £150 , aurantis are not that much cheeper , that is a lot of money to gamble with. personally i will never keep aurantis at tropical temps or mixed with anything else again ,i have seen how much better they are kept species only and at sub-tropical . if i was to mix any channa in the future i would only try it with pleuro as they seem the most forgiving in a com.
but really no-one can or should advise you to com any channa , that is a desicion that is down to you , and any consiquences are then yours

I would agree with Tropheus.

From my own personal expearence the difference between Auranti's kept in subtropical temps and tropical temps is like night and day.

I did keep mine in tropical temps for an extended period. During this time they were always hiding not very active and not interactive and I am preety sure it caused a light dose of HITH.

I have now been keeping them sub tropical 20C-21C sometimes a little lower for 18 months now. Now both of them are always out, they flare there gills at me everytime I go to close to the tank. This isn't a pair terratory thing either as they are both female. They eat alot more aswell. Their colours are also much more intense. It's very clear that they are happier at the cooler temps. A cave is definatly a requirement for Auranti's. They natually live in holes in the river bank.

In regards to the comm of Pluero's. Pluero's are actually one of the more 'Community' Snakeheads with large fish that can't be swallowed, unfortunatly all the others Snakeheads of suitable size are not.

In all honesty you may get away with it but it will not be ideal for the fish in regards to temp and aggression and general happyness and health. You will almost certainly end up with fraid fins.

If you have got a pair of Auranti's the aggresion is increased. If you do a medium water change with cooler water all hell will break lose.

I personally would not do it. I have been one of those keepers in the past that tryed to comm multiple snakeheads. Most of the time they survive but most of the time they have split fins and other injuries and usually you only see the dominant fish. I have learn't from expearence.

An actual pair of Auranti's is a rare find. There are many of us SH keepers that would jump at the chance to grab them.

Again the choice is yours.

ok thanks guys! im guna have to put the auranti in trop for at least a week, unless i magic up a cycled tank before then, how ever i have the choice of getting one big pleuro, or a group of lil pleuro, so ill prob grab the group and grow them out, then move the pleuro into the com at a later date... how long it take to grow a pleuro 12"?

and i doubt the auranti are a sexed pair... the shop i getting em from sells all snakeheads with one information label saying snakehead sp. basic info and different prices.... but they looked good, and size of my forearm! i wet myself when i saw the price....

it will take , approx around 18month to get to 12" i would of thought , one word of warning ,small pleuros are very frigile and die at the slightest thing , you would be much better with the adult if you just wanted one ,as the adults are pretty bulletproof , but the prices useally reflect that
