Well you guys prolly all saw my last thread on the red devil in the 55g, but i decided that i was going to put a big fish through that.

What i decided is to use the 55g to house my green terror in till my 75g is open, in which i think im going to do a small community with a couple of birchirs, the green terror and maybe like a firemouth or something, like a nother small cichlid and some dithers.

So then at this point i was thinking, if that 55g is going to be just a growout, then why not have some cool fish in there, that could stay in there for life. I have seen gold severums at my lfs, and i really liked them.

What i was wondering is that could sevs be kept in a 55g for life? And also is there anything that could kept with them in there?

I was thinking that hopefully, setting up a peaceful cichlid tank, with two golds, and a getting a geo in the future. And then some bottom dwellers like some botia loaches or something in the future. I was wondering if that could work?

Any feedback would be very helpful

Probably fo a while but will eventually need a upgrade. My sevs in a 55 now.

a sev will be fine in a 55 for life, they only hit about 8" depending on the type.
a couple could go in but im unsure if 2 will get along or if your better with 4+ or just the single one.
it will be fine for life if i remembered the 55 footprint right as 48x12" or 48x15"?

if you do put 2 in i suggest keeping an eye out for one sev picking on the other and preventing it eating. i ended up with one sev after he killed his sibling. he did turn out to be hyper aggressive/territorial as he got larger but from what ive read he was an extreme exception to the general rule.
its doubtful that the same will happen to you but you still need to be aware that it can happen so your not shocked or unprepared if it occurs.

That really sucks. I bought the two gold sevs at 1.5 inch size and grew them together not knowing what I have is a male and a female. The male bullies her from time to time until they spawned in the tank unexpectedly. Poor fish cannot defend the eggs well from the feisty loaches.:nilly:

An established pair will go very well in a 55 (i'd have argued the point until i recently tried it :) )

Sevs are appauling parents, so if you want to spawn, keep them solo. If your not fussed, then mid sized tetras and cats are all ideal tank mates.

Watch out for bullying, especially in the early stages of courtship, as well as one become hyper aggro. My male gave his first female a real shoeing (a wild female green i gave away, before i understood what i had) and he still hands out a pasting to my gold female every now and then.

In my eyes, 2 sevs in a 55 should be treat the same as 1 Oscar. Lots of water changes, good filteration, etc etc.

Give it a go
