That's a short tentacle plate coral to me, side view pictures may help. They like to be kept on the floor of the aquarium. Low to moderate light.

Here's one that looks similar to yours

It does look a lot like that. Very cool. What's been throwing us off though is its growing off a half inch stem.

hairy mushroom, ricordia maybe but i still think plate coral

Late reply but plate corals contain a small carbonate stew. You will often see it produce babies from there

I would guess plate coral too. Can you maybe touch it to make it retract so the skeleton in viewable?
