Came home to find this on my brand new baby SAL. Fed him this morning and he did not have it. Could it be heater burn? there's a large exposed heater in the tank.

video is clearest at the start and approx 0:27

Hoping it's not a fungus or something sinister, he is WC.

That looks like what happened to my one old WAL. I never was able to determine if it was caused by the heater or a decoration, but I was able to get it to heal 100%.

Just pull it out of the water, dry off the affected area & a little bit around that, and gob on a bunch of Neosporin; literally gob it on there as some will come off if you use too little. Be sure to do frequent large water changes as well.

Also, I fixed your video.

Thank you!

I'll do a 50% WC tomorrow after work--the tank is very overfiltered (detritus on the floor is algae n' tank gunk from a larger tank I put there for baby farlowellas in there to munch on).

Neosporin, though? Should I try to scrape off the sort of nasty puffiness or just put the neosporin on top of it? And I've never pulled a fish like this out of the water, he is literally the size of a largeish nightcrawler. How do I hold him down without hurting him? Only fish I've pulled out of the water were cichlids, much stiffer/less slimy-wiggly.

Again, thanks!

Update--

He looks MUCH better this morning. I'm still going to do a solid WC tonight but all the stuff sticking to him is gone and he just looks a little gray in the area it happened. So I'll probably skip pulling him out and medicating. Also, I saw him hanging out under the heater with that part of his body pressed against it, so mystery solved probably. I moved the heater so he wouldn't keep doing it.

Last I saw him he was eating krill so I think it's gonna be OK.
