Indiana
my question is could i have put a red pacu (9 in) into an outdoor pond with a heater??? it was about 80 gal. oh yeah and i live in indiana we get cold witners.

Pacu grow to 24 plus inches and would need ore then 80 gallons. You could build a heated pond outside, may be expensive to heat though. Many people around here and up in the Rocky Mountains have outdoor hot tubs, which they heat throughout the winter. Possible you could do the same for and outdoor heated pond.

One other point, in cold or very hot areas you need the pond to be as large and deep as possible for temperature stabalization. A single power outage of just a few hours duration and an Indiana winter would freeze an 80g pool solid.

A greenhouse OVER the pond and a space heater for it greatly reduce the energy needed to heat the ..no longer outdoor pond. You also pick up a LOT of solar radiation from the glass and can add extra solar heating on the roof in the form of black pvc pipes. attached to the filter system. hardly worth doing however for any pond less than 1200 gallons or so. I'd recomend 15k at least....(thats not as big as you might think it is.)

Ive built several of the solar systems yes but not the greenhouse. I have seen a pond built this way however in Scottsdale AZ. From what I was told it worked very well but then AZ winters can hardly be compared to the frozen north or Scotland...

Did you mean 800 gals.? Then maybe, but the electric/gas bill will be way expensive and IMM not worth the trouble.

i live in the south and my 5000 gal is indoors and the temp. is not a problem because of my region but heating is still very exspensive in winter months. any one close i rescue pacus that have outgrown there tank. thanks
