Just picked up the 1st "monster" fish for my new tank! Around 8" TT eel, I see him trying to squeeze himself behind the filter intake and he wasn't looking happy at all, then he came up to the glass when I was looking at him so I had to buy him! He seems really active and not scared at all. I've only got really bad pics but here he is

Just hope it doesn't make it to the impeller.

I think it kind of pinned him at the bend so I had to turn it off the take the nozzle off and turn it back on to push him out. I think I have solved the problem now and I only had to sacrifice a net :) here's some pics.

I'm lucky it was while I was home or I think it would have killed him

With any spiny eels, and in a way especially larger ones, make sure any and all openings to your tank are sealed off very well and if necessary, have a heavy lid... since in the past, i've had a 2 foot fire eel, squeeze out the opening where my water line returns to the tank and ended up dry on the floor, after his 2nd attempt of escaping, the first i managed to save him since i was home, the 2nd he jumped while i was sleeping...

Also, NEVER underestimate the size of an opening they can squeeze through, since i never in a million years would have thought my old eel would make it out (what i thought) was a small opening, but alas, he did, and is now forever gone...

^ yeah, lots of stories of them escaping into filter hoses and out of tanks ;)

get him some more hide spots and you shouldn't have any issues. driftwood pvc pipes ect all make great hideouts. the more the better.

I have slate and driftwood in there on 1 side but like to leave open swimming space as well, he has settled in nicely now and no problems since modifying the fx5 :) he eats like a pig! He has sniffed at some hikari predator pellets but hasn't taken any yet, maybe in the future :)
